International Awards and Honours
International Awards are the honors or recognition of an individual or a community. Usually, these recognitions are in the fields of Science, Mathematics, Literature, Technology, Community Services, Architecture, Bravery, Philanthropy, Arts, Sports, Movies, Theatre, and other fields.
These prizes were instituted in 1091 by a Swedish scientist, Dr. Alfred Noble; the discoverer of dynamite.
Six prizes are awarded any for Chemistry, Physics, Medicine, Literature, Peace and, Economics – started in 1969.
The following Indian so far have been awarded these prizes, Dr. Rabindranath Tagore, in 1913 for his “Geetanjali”, Dr. C.V. Raman for physics in 1930, Mother Teresa for peace in 1979, professor Amartya Sen in 1998 for Economics, and Kailash Satyarthi in 2014 for peace.
Two Indians including Sanjeev Chaturvedi the former chief vigilance officer of AIIMS who was also a whistle-blower on corruption at the country’s premier institute were awarded the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award for 2015. The other winner is Anshu Gupta, founder of NGO Goonj, who has been instrumental in social work. Three other selected for the award are Kommaly Chanthvong from Laos, Ligaya Fernando-Amilbangsa from the Philippines, and Kyaw Thu from Myanmar, the board of trustees of the Ramin Magsaysay Award Foundation (RMAF) announced on July 19, 2015. The award has been given on August 31, 2015, in Manila.
Gandhi Peace Prize
The government instituted this ₹ 1 crore prize on the lines of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1995.
It is the highest Civilian International award by the government of India. The award for 2014 has been given to India Space Research Organization (ISRO).
Man Booker Prize
Marlon James, a Jamaican novelist won the Man Booker Prize 2015 for his novel ‘A Brief History of Seven Killings’.
Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament, and Development
The award was instituted in the memory of Mrs. Indira Gandhi to foster creative cooperation among the world.
The award for 2015 has been given to United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). This prize carries ₹ 25 lakh and a citation.
This prestigious award of the film world is given annually by the ‘National Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences’ of America.
